I would have enjoyed March more if I’d known it was the calm before the storm. April’s onslaught beat the proverbial hell out of me, picked me up, dusted me off, and then was kind enough to pat me on the shoulder as it was leaving and stage whisper, “Psst… newsletter,” before running off and laughing manically as I groaned into my palms.
So where to begin?
Whelp, there was Easter with all of the expected family meh we completely absented ourselves from. Yeah, I’m not big on engaging when I know I’m going to regret it. Ok, maybe it’s not regretting the things that come out of my mouth while in close proximity to a chosen few that’s the real issue. Tomato, tomatoe, whatever. We had waffles and a rousing game of “extinguish the lawn” instead. I’ve been assured the resulting moonscape with be incredibly lush by summer. Don’t ask, just practice fire safety, people.
The ravens are getting older, so for the first time none of them had a stuffy in their basket. And no, I didn’t get all nostalgic about it. The cat has had his wicked way with the ones already kicking around here one too many times. You can’t unsee that.
Then the galley copy of Flame & Shadow came in. That’s pretty much a .pdf of what your book is going to look like verbatim and the cue to pull out the microscope. It’s also a big, “Holy shit, this is it,” and gives you the opportunity to freak out and obsess over the entirety of your work.
Yep. Fun times with a deadline.
Meanwhile, the sequel to Flame & Shadow, Air & Darkness, is done, and I’m gearing up for publication talks. Breaker, in its infinite wisdom, has apparently gotten jealous and decided that now is the perfect time monopolize what little bandwidth I have left, along with an unnamed project that’s been niggling at the edges of my subconscious.
Nuts to that for now. With Breaker I finally pushed through the scene that was stymieing me and now I’m doing another round of edits. You know, because 50 billion of them aren’t enough. My hope is to have that out on query v3.0 by summer. It’s definitely falling solidly into the Dark Romance, Epic Sci-fi category, so I’ll have a whole new batch of agents to bug.
Oh, and did I mention we were planning a family vacation?
Yeah, for more info on that bowl of spaghetti, hop on over to that menu on the right and sign up for my newsletter! You’ll get all the rest of the details on April’s onslaught, and be the first to know if I need bail money on the second of each month.
