Hey ya’ll! Check out my latest article for DIY MFA, Genre Gateway Books for Kids, linked here. It’s all about how I got the ravens reading and what books hooked them on genre fiction. Their choices may surprise you, I mean, they sure made my eyebrow rise. As crazy as it sounds, I’d never considered that they wouldn’t like the same things I had growing up. Yeah, it was one hell of a shock, and trying to lure them over to reading some of my favorites was a lot harder than I’d expected.
Especially with the prevalence of “potato chip books” on the market today. You know, quick and easy reads without much substance. They might go down real easy, but there’s no substitute for a steak. That, and they’re not necessarily chockfull of things I want my brood emulating.
Yes, yes, do as I say, not as I do, but I’m a parent and get to play that card.
So if you have reluctant readers at home, or are just looking for some kid-friendly picks, check this one out. I’d love to hear if you’ve got some of your own genre gateway books for kids to add! And to get the low down on the rest of the shenanigans going on in the Nevermore household, along with info on all my new releases (there’s a shit ton in the works), sign up for my newsletter! The form’s on the right, so what are you waiting for?
